Public Service Award Given to Martha Sue Hall
RGEA is proud to honor Martha Sue Hall of Albemarle with the Vann Langston Public Service Award for her extraordinary service to her community and to North Carolina.
Bennett Place | Durham NC
With a chorus of thousands of cicadas singing in the background, 47 NCRGEA members from District 4 toured the site where the last surrender of a major Confederate army in the American Civil War, Bennett Place.
The tour, organized by District 4’s Community Advisory Board (CAB) and coordinated by co-chair’s Ed McBride and Regi Taylor, was part of NCRGEA’s CAB Community Engagement program.
Members learned about the Bennett family and how their home became the site of Confederate General Johnston’s surrender of more than 89,000 soldiers to Union General Sherman effectively ended the war. This all took place after Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia.

NCRGEA 2024 Spring Conference
NCRGEA welcomes our members, pre-retirees and guests to Raleigh on Monday or Tuesday | April 1 or 2 for our Spring Conference! The venue space is limited, so we are offering the event again on Tuesday. Please choose which date works best for you.
We’ll have free continental breakfast to enjoy as you attend our morning sessions, which include:
- “Medicare and Healthcare” by CenterWell
- “Local Landscaping Tips” by NC Cooperative Extension
- “Brain Fitness” by Brookdale Senior Living
There will be many vendors at information tables to answer your questions and provide one-on-one assistance. Giveaways will occur during the day!
Breakout sessions for state and local government retirees will be held to provide updates on your benefits. Candidates for State Treasurer will speak; this is the office that manages the pension for our retirees. Our current State Treasurer will discuss the current news from their office, and presentations will be given by the State Employees Credit Union, the Local Government Federal Credit Union, as well as CenterWell and AMBA.
Door prizes will occur throughout the presentations!
We will have a catered lunch that is free, and we hope you bring a guest to also enjoy this day of fun! They will also attend free~
NCRGEA Begins a Lunch & Learn Series!

Our Community Liaison, Deryl Fulmer, has heard from many NCRGEA members that they would like information on being Active & Engaged! We have launched a series of virtual Lunch & Learn events for 2023 with professional panelists who will cover many topics that will inspire and inform our members.
This June, our kickoff topic to the Lunch & Learn Series, “Aging Un-Lonely: Staying Socially Connected for your Health,” will be on the topic of the Loneliness Epidemic.
It is no secret that the number of older adults age 65 and older is growing, and many are socially isolated and regularly feel lonely. In this session, you will:

- learn the difference between social isolation and loneliness

- understand the health implications

- get tips to combat these health concerns, as older adults are at a higher risk for physical and mental health declines, including dementia and heart disease
Please join us Wednesday, June 28 from 12:30 to 1:30pm for this enlightening conversation with panelists Dr. Megan Smith, UNC-Charlotte, Rebecca Freeman, NC Department of Adult and Aging Services and Dr. Cheryl Greenberg, AARP, to learn more about this growing concern and find out how to age un-lonely and healthy.

North Carolina Retired Governmental Employees’ Association Announces Virtual Celebration of Public Service Conference

Raleigh, NC – In honor of public servants and their service, North Carolina Retired Governmental Employees’ Association (NCRGEA) is excited to host a Celebration of Public Service Week, June 6-10, 2022, as a free virtual event open to the public.
The hybrid event programming is geared towards current retirees but will also include special sessions for governmental employees and those who have not yet retired. As part of the week-long slate of sessions, participants will have access to a variety of flexible learning and social activities that can be enjoyed online from any location. Topics will revolve around advocacy, NCRGEA benefits, local engagement with pre-retiree awareness, and public service. There will also be pre-session opportunities related to digital communications.
With multiple sessions offered each day on different topics and using different formats, attendees can choose to attend each day or drop in and out during the week at their own convenience. In addition, participants may choose to join sessions live or catch up later by watching recordings when it is more convenient.
